North Valley, California; San Jose’s Famous Art District and its Rising Drug Abuse Crisis

About North Valley; The Neighborhood in Review and in Summary

The “Berryessa District” or North Valley in San Jose, California is located in the northeast portion of the city, between Coyote Creek and the infamous Diablo Range foothills. The neighborhood borders Milpitas along Landess Avenue to the north and the Alum Rock neighborhood of East San Jose along Mabury Road to the south.

The informal yet more common name of the, “Berryessa District”, comes from a member of the prominent Basque–Spanish Berreyesa family: Nicolas Berreyesa, a California settler who was granted Rancho Milpitas in 1834. The residential neighborhood is part of the Fourth City Council District, along with Alviso, and was represented by Chuck Reed prior to his election as Mayor of the entire city of San Jose. The name North Valley is sometimes used by locals to refer to Berryessa. Informal use of the term sometimes also includes parts of Milpitas and Alviso as well to mean the northern portion of the Santa Clara Valley in general.

This is an area that thrives on culture, art, food, and music, making the neighborhood one of the most popular and one of the most frequently visited in all of the San Jose area. The annual Berryessa/ North Valley Art & Wine festival is one of the most well known local events in the area and has been a yearly tradition for over 30 years now. The current festival, typically held in May, includes 120-150 artist booths, 14 food booths, (all run by non-profit groups from the Berryessa area), a Community Row area with booths from a variety of service groups and non-profits offering information to the festival goers, a Business Row with representatives from the Berryessa and North Valley community and other local San Jose Businesses, a stage area with entertainment by local amateur entertainers as well as professional entertainment and booths from several local radio stations.

However, this festival is just an example of one of the many of the different types of festivals and events that this neighborhood puts on. In truth, this is a neighborhood and urban area that is known for being one of the most interesting and exciting in all of San Jose.

Drug Addiction on the Rise in North Valley

Unfortunately this area’s popularity has also attracted a significant amount of drug abuse and addiction amongst its residents. This is truly sad indeed as the area has up until recently been incredibly successful and affluent and has been able to do much and to expand nicely as a result of this. Now however, drug addiction and substance abuse has begun to take hold in the area, particularly amongst the neighborhood’s youth.

For the residents of North Valley, the most common drugs have even cocaine and heroin, both of which generally make it all the way up to North Valley from Mexico. Regardless of how it gets there though, the fact remains that the drugs that are there that are not wanted and the drugs and the addictions themselves must be removed.

North Valley has truly begun to suffer, particularly amongst the youth of the city. This is particularly troubling because not only are young adults more likely to die from drug addiction, but young adults are also the future of the nation. Efforts must be made soon to stop more young adults from becoming addiction in the North Valley area.

Facts and Statistics; What is Occurring with Drug Use in North Valley and All Across California

To better understand the looming crisis that has begun to spread all across California and all across the United States for that matter, the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA), teamed up with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to study, examine, analyze, and research the drug crisis here, and to then hopefully arrive at a solution or resolution that would work best for reversing the tide of addiction.

So that the reader can have some context as to just what is occurring in North Valley, particularly with heroin and cocaine, the two most common drugs, some facts and statistics regarding them have been included below so as to provide the reader with context as to just how serious of an issue this really is:

  • While today cocaine is more popular in foreign countries like Scotland and Brazil, the drug is still a mainstay for many U.S. drug addicts. For example, of the 4.6 million drug-related visits to U.S. emergency rooms in 2009, more than one out of every five of them had illicit drugs like cocaine to blame, with cocaine alone accounting for almost half a million of them.
  • About 600,000 of the 2.4 million people using cocaine also use the crack form of the drug as well.
  • A cocaine user has a significant five percent increased risk of death in comparison to the general population.
  • People from the ages of 26 to 34 are using cocaine the most out of all age groups with regard to lifetime prevalence.
  • Heroin was to blame for 213,118 emergency room visits in 2009.
  • In 2013, more than 5,000 people lost their lives to heroin overdose.
  • Heroin is accountable for most of the 18 percent of opiate-related treatment facility admissions in the United States.

Rehabilitation; How North Valley Residents are Dealing with Heroin and Cocaine Addiction

For the residents of North Valley, fighting addiction has never been so difficult. The heroin and cocaine that is smuggled into North Valley from Mexico is more potent and pure than it has ever been before, and it has hooked many of the residents of this once peaceful neighborhood.

The residents of North Valley are responding in exactly the correct way however. The best way to beat drug addiction and substance abuse by far is with the help of an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and addressment treatment center and rehabilitation program. Only an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence rehabilitation organization, detoxification facility, treatment center, and recovery program possesses the necessary tools and methods to effectively not only detox but also rehabilitate those individuals who are struggling with addiction.

If all of the addicted residents of North Valley enter into inpatient rehabilitation programs, then the city will stand a good chance at beating addiction en masse. This is of the utmost importance, because if nothing is done about the problem then it will surely only get much worse.
